Recently, there has been a rapid increase in the number of baked confectionery stalls that do not have actual stalls, but are active only by opening stalls at events.Of particular note is the increase in the number of “gluten-free” products, a category that was once rare.We would like to introduce “Oyatsu-ya mocotto,” which mainly operates stalls at events such as the Sapporo Underground Walking Space (Chikaho). We spoke with them about their special “rice snacks” and their signature “onigiri” rice balls.
What is “Oyatsu-ya mocotto,” specializing in event openings?
Oyatsu-ya mocotto is a stall that sells light meals such as rice balls and quiches, as well as baked sweets made with 100% Hokkaido rice flour.
They are mainly located in Sapporo Underground Walking Space (Chikaho) and Aeon Mall.
By the way… Underground Walking Space is a 520-meter underground passageway located just below Sapporo Ekimae-dori, the main street of Sapporo, connecting Odori Subway Station and Sapporo Station.

The long, wide aisles are dotted at both ends with marche-like stall spaces lined with booths of individual stalls, making the area a bit of a shopping spot.
Oyatsu-ya mocotto is one of the stalls that will be eavesdropping at this Chikaho event.
(Chikaho store openings 2-3 times a week./See the information column at the bottom of this article for more details.)

mocotto started opening its event stall in April 2023, and will soon celebrate its second anniversary at the time of our 2025 interview.
The shop sells mainly baked goods such as scones, muffins, and cookies made from “Yumepirika” rice flour produced in Hokkaido, as well as light meals such as quiche and brown rice balls.

Maiko Tanaka, the creator and owner of the stall, comes from a hotel patisserie background.
「We want to bring safe and delicious rice snacks to those who cannot eat wheat.」
With this in mind, all of their products are gluten-free and made mainly from carefully selected Hokkaido ingredients.

It is amazing that they make not only sweets but also snacks!

I used to work as a housekeeper… I like both pastries and cooking.I used to work as a housekeeper… I like both pastries and cooking.

When we think of housekeeping, we have the image of a person who has a limited amount of time to complete his or her work.
I see! That’s why you can arrange so many kinds of products.

I am the sole manufacturer, but I ask a helper named Fumi to manage the stall, wrap, and deliver to consignees.
The owner, Ms. Tanaka, her assistant Fumi, and sometimes her son also stand in the stall. It’s kind of a homey and lovely atmosphere.
Incidentally, the name of the stall, “mocotto,” comes from the name of Ms. Tanaka’s beloved dog.
The cute and friendly name of the stall made me feel more and more familiar with it.

Perhaps due to the nature of the event stall, many of the customers are new, but even so, one-third of the customers are repeat customers.
They say that their clientele includes not only those with wheat allergies, but also many health-conscious people.

『I had an image of rice sweets as healthy food and not so sweet, but mocotto’s sweets are delicious!』I was very happy when I received a compliment.

①Sweets using various types of brown rice koji such as salt koji, sweet koji, ginger koji, cocoa koji, etc.
(Sugar-free scones with sweet koji, brown rice balls with ginger koji, etc.)
②Products using the original haskap from Atsuma
(Salted Haskap rice balls, salted cookies, etc.)
③Snacks and refreshments such as salty cookies, rice balls, quiche, etc. also available

I think it is rare to find snackable cookies with rice flour snacks.
Also, I see that there is such a thing as salted Haskap!

The haskap is from my aunt’s farm. The salt pickles are a recreation of the ones my aunt used to make for me.
What is Haskap?
Derived from the Ainu word “hashikapu” meaning “that which grows in abundance on the branches”.
Japanese name: “Black-finned Nightshade.”
It refers to the fruit of the honeysuckle family, which grows wild mainly in Hokkaido, Japan, and is characterized by blue berries that look like elongated blueberries.Because of its strong acidity, however, it is not eaten raw, and most of it is sold as jam or other processed products.
*In Atsuma Town, a famous Haskap producing area, the culture of eating onigiri (rice balls) with pickled Haskap or salted Haskap as a garnish has taken root.

I will share my impressions of the Haskap rice balls later in this article!
Real rice snacks, rice balls and quiche
These are the products purchased on the day of the interview.

Two kinds of brown rice balls and quiche
I had already purchased and tasted the Haskap rice balls some time ago.

The bright purple color of the Haskap is impressive onigiri (brown rice ball).
What on earth does it taste like?I was excited to try it.
Then, I felt a very nostalgic sensation.

Is this …… dried plums?
This is just my personal opinion, but the taste and flavor is refreshingly sour, much like pickled plums.
We found that salted haskap tastes well suited to the Japanese palate. The brown rice is also cooked moist and very easy to eat.
Next are the ginger malted rice balls and homemade bacon quiche, both purchased on the day of the interview.

Ginger malted pork miso has a gentle and mild flavor.I wondered if it would be better to warm it up a little since it is pork.I thought it would be better to heat it up a little since it is pork, but perhaps it was the power of the koji, it was moist and very flavorful even as it was.
The homemade bacon quiche, as recommended by the store, can be warmed up to bring back the crispiness of the dough.
Usually warmed in a toaster oven, this time I wrapped them in foil and rebaked them on a fish grill for about 5 minutes.
The outside of the pie crust will be crispy and the inside will be thick…

Happiness!
The thinly spread dough is crispy and does not feel greasy after eating!。
The homemade bacon, which is filled with a lot of bacon, is flavored with green tea.市Many people may be concerned about additives in smoked products sold on the market, but this is a safe choice.
Various rice flour baked goods
Next, I got a Haskap Cheese Salt Cookie, a Raisin Butter Sandwich, and a variety of scones.

Haskap Cheese Salt Cookies are a combination of powdered cheese flavor and sweet and sour haskap.I tried several other varieties of this snack cookie series, including tomato flavor and edamame flavor, and they were all addictive once you get into them (laugh).
It goes well with alcoholic beverages and is also a good souvenir for those who do not like sweets.
A variety of scones are also sugar-free.
However, the scones have the natural sweetness of brown rice malt, so it would be better to call them “bread-like”.Like the quiche, this dish is also wrapped in foil and heated on the grill for about 5 minutes before serving, making it crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
When enlarged, it looks like this.

Like the quiche, warming it up gives it a buttery aroma that makes me happy.
It is delicious enough as it is, but a little bit of extra care goes a long way, so please give rebaking a try.
On the other hand, the “Rice Flour Sablet Raisin Butter Sandwich” tastes better when chilled.
It is true that the buttercream tastes better when it is cold.
These rum raisins are also specially made by mocotto. The rum is imported from Ishigaki Island for an authentic taste.

You could feel the care that went into all of them, and the flavors were hearty and rich!♪
